Understanding Inadvertent Switches and the Quick Path to Resolution
If your electricity service was switched without your request, or you received an unexpected notice that your account was closed, it’s likely because of an inadvertent switch. This happens when electricity service is moved to another provider by accident, often because an incorrect address was entered during enrollment. The information below explains what may have happened, how we’ll work to resolve the issue for you and what you can expect next.

How inadvertent switches happen
In Texas, service starts and stops are tied to your home address and meter. When someone starts electricity service at a new address and accidentally requests service at the incorrect apartment or house number, their request can be tied to your home instead. That move-in request then ends your service to make room for theirs. This happens more often in apartments, duplexes and neighborhoods with similar addresses. Here are the two most common ways it plays out.
Someone requests service at your address by mistake.
You may have received an unexpected email or letter from us that your account is closing. If that wasn’t at your request, call us as soon as possible and we’ll take care of the issue.
A TXU Energy customer mistakenly enrolls at your address.
Other times, a request from a customer attempting to enroll with us provides an incorrect address and mistakenly closes your account with another provider.
How TXU Energy helps through inadvertent switches
Once we’re notified of the issue, a case is created immediately by a team of account specialists. This customer support team works to restore service to the provider originally selected, whether that’s us or another provider. After that, there’s no action needed from you while we work to resolve the issue. Rest assured you won’t be responsible for any electricity charges that don’t belong to you.
What to do if your service is inadvertently switched
1. Call your provider right away.
Explain that you did not request a move-out or an account closure, and ask what event triggered the change. A specific request — "please tell me what closed my account and when" — points your provider straight to the record that needs fixing.
2. Explain any urgent needs
If your household includes young children, older adults or anyone who relies on electricity for medical equipment, say so. It helps your provider understand how serious the interruption is and route your case the right way.
3. Keep a simple record.
Write down the date and time of each call, who you spoke with, your case number and what was promised next. If anything needs a second look, you'll have a clear timeline ready — which also makes any later step much easier.
Your provider will look at when the move-out or switch was submitted, where the request came from and whether it was tied to your address by mistake. They will then work to reverse the error and restore your service. If any field work is needed — say, the meter has to be turned back on — your provider will coordinate with your local utility so you're not stuck making calls to two different companies. Throughout, you should be provided with a case number and updates so you can follow it all the way to a fix.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
How did this happen?Inadvertent switches usually happen when an incorrect address is provided when someone signs up for new electricity service.
-
How long will it take to resolve?
We understand this situation can be confusing and even frustrating. We’ll work quickly to resolve the issue and answer any questions you may have. Behind the scenes, service switches and move-ins in Texas run through the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), which operates the state's power grid. Our specialists open a case the moment you reach out, then communicate with ERCOT to notify the other electricity provider involved. We then work with the other provider to resolve the issue.
Most cases are resolved within approximately two weeks, though corrections on your bill, if needed, may take up to 21 days.
-
How will I know when the issue is resolved? We’ll reach out once it’s resolved. TXU Energy customers can follow their case in MyAccount through the updates we provide in the Customer Request Center.

Resources for complaints
We'd always rather solve the problem for you directly first, but you have options in addition to our support. The Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) oversees consumer protections in the Texas electricity market, including informal and formal complaint processes. If an issue with any provider isn't resolved through normal support, you can file a complaint with the PUCT and submit your bills, notices and call records for review. Keeping those documents organized makes the process smoother.
If your service ended and it wasn’t at your request, it usually means an enrollment got tied to your address by mistake. Gather your details, call us and ask exactly what changed — and we'll work to get your service back where it belongs as fast as we can.
