With triple-digit temperatures on the way, TXU Energy is teaming up with the United Way of Abilene today to share heat safety awareness during the company’s launch of its 19th annual Beat the Heat program. TXU Energy’s recent $5,000 donation to the United Way of Abilene helped purchase 350 box fans, which will be distributed to agencies and clients through the Basic Needs Network, a collaboration of nonprofit organizations that serve those in West Central Texas.

“Over the years, our signature Beat the Heat program has reached thousands of Texans, helping them to keep cool and stay safe during the hot summer months,” said Caroline Atkins, TXU Energy community affairs manager. “This outreach effort is designed to educate people on ways to avoid heat-related emergencies and reduce their energy consumption. With warmer-than-average temperatures predicted for this summer, heat safety programs are more important than ever.”

Some of the recommended heat safety tips include:

  • Drink one glass of cool water for every 20 minutes of heat exposure.
  • Don’t turn off your air conditioner. Set your thermostat at 78°or higher.
  • Avoid eating hot foods and heavy meals.

Abilene agencies and clients will also receive information about TXU Energy Aid – the largest bill-payment assistance program among competitive retail electricity providers in the nation. In Abilene alone, TXU Energy Aid has provided more than $365,000 to the United Way, helping nearly 1,400 clients keep their homes powered.

“All too often, families in financial crisis have to choose between feeding their families, buying medication, or paying their electric bill,” said Kim Campbell, TXU Energy customer advocacy senior manager. “This can be incredibly unsafe, particularly for seniors, children, and people with medical conditions. We want everyone to know that help is available.”

In total, TXU Energy Aid has provided more than 500,000 valued customers with nearly $100 million in bill-payment assistance since 1983. Through the support of TXU Energy employees, customers, and other donors, the program helps an average of 20,000 customers each year with bill-payment assistance.
