Every day, we talk to many families in the process of moving, so we've collected a few packing tips over the years to help you out. Check out the tips below, and see if it helps make your move a little easier:
Start Six Weeks Early.
Don't let procrastination get the best of you. All the great packing tips in the world aren't much help at the last minute. So get a notebook to take inventory of all of your boxes and their contents. You can even pack a little each day to get ahead of the game.
Use Sturdy Boxes.
With some clear packing tape, seal the boxes on top and bottom. Also, make sure that the tops are completely flat. This way, boxes can be stacked without doing damage to your belongings. Using sturdy boxes is one of the most important packing tips to make sure your things arrive safely.
Don't Unpack Your Dressers.
To make moving even easier, you don't have to worry about emptying your drawers and putting the contents into boxes. If you have clothes and other unbreakables in your dresser, leave them in there and move the piece as a whole. Be sure to tape the drawers closed so they won't unexpectedly pop open during handling.
Tape Screws and Bolts Onto the Item They Belong.
If you have to take something apart, like furniture or exercise equipment, keep the screws and bolts together for reassembly at your new home. You might store the hardware in a marked sandwich bag or just tape it to the item itself.
Pack Up the Guest Room First — or the Dining Room or Whatever Room is Used the Least.
Try to pack each room one at a time. Leave the boxes in that room until you are completely finished packing.
Label Every Box.
No list of packing tips is complete without mentioning labels. So whether you use computer labels or a marker, be sure to label each box according to its contents. This will help you unpack when you get to your new home. It will also help you keep track of your belongings during the move.
Of all the packing tips you can find, however, one important item on the list doesn’t actually involve packing at all: Set up your new home with electricity and other utilities before you move. TXU Energy is here to help. With a range of plans to suit a variety of different needs, you're sure to find the right plan for your family.
