Choose TXU Energy for simple, straightforward savings on electricity. View Plans
Most undertakings in life go much better with some foresight and planning, and making a move definitely falls into this category. At TXU Energy, we’ve compiled a list of moving tips and common moving mistakes that can save you some time and energy and hopefully make your move go as smoothly as possible.
Check out your moving company
If you’re moving for a job, your company may be able to recommend a reputable mover. Referrals from friends and family are also quite useful, but do your own research on the company’s reputation. The Better Business Bureau is a good starting point. Interview at least three companies, and trust your instincts. A meticulous and caring sales consultant is often an indicator of a quality company, which can help you avoid costly moving mistakes.
Get a good survey to get a good estimate
A reputable moving company will do an in-home survey to determine the scope of your move. This is the time to disclose everything – the five boxes of files stored up in your attic that need to be moved, for example, or the fact your new residence is a condo with strict delivery schedule limitations. Surprises on either end of your move are one example of moving mistakes that could mean bad news for your budget.
Understand what charges are covered
In addition to the base rate, there can be several additional costs to a move: boxes and packing materials, labor to crate large items, fuel surcharges, insurance and more. Have your sales consultant explain the estimate in detail and make sure you know the bottom line before you sign.
Beware the lowball quote
Moving company sales consultants are surprisingly accurate. If you are comparing apples-to-apples quotes, the numbers should be very close. If one company is significantly lower, carefully review the estimate to make sure nothing was missed.
Don’t pack everything
If you’re making a cross-country move, it could be a few days or even a week before you see your possessions again. In the meantime, you’ll need clothes, toiletries, medicines, relocation documents, and perhaps your laptop and other personal electronic devices at hand. Anything you want with you – and not on the moving truck – needs to be clearly marked.
One way to avoid moving mistakes with these items is to empty a closet, and place your packed suitcases and other items you plan to carry with you inside. Then lock the door or seal it with packing tape, and place a large “Do Not Pack” sign on the door.
Don’t wait until the last minute
Begin scheduling your move as soon as you can – but certainly no less than two months before the big day. This gives your mover time to get you into the schedule, and will provide you with enough time to sort, purge, organize and get ready for moving day.
