Whether you're moving to Texas for the first time or moving from one great Texas town to another, planning ahead is essential. And because we help make moving easy for lots of Texas families every day, we'd like to share a few tips and tricks to help make your Texas relocation much less stressful.

Pick Up Plenty of Supplies.
If you plan to do all or some of your own packing, having all your supplies at hand will make the process go more smoothly. Pick up packing tape, boxes and markers, and begin collecting newspapers to use for wrapping and cushioning fragile items. Instead of buying boxes, you can keep costs down by visiting local grocery stores to ask for old boxes. Or you can browse the free section of your local classifieds, Craigslist or Freecycle network for supplies. Sturdy banana boxes are excellent for heavy glass objects or books.

Get a Head Start.
Pace yourself and you’ll do a more organized job without running out of energy. Begin work at least two weeks in advance, and make a to-do list so nothing is overlooked. Start packing items you don’t use every day. Starting early should give you give you plenty of time and room to make adjustments in your plans if something unexpected comes up.

Plan How You Pack.
Box household items by room and category. For instance, keep all of your living room décor together and label each box with large, descriptive words. Then when you get to your new home, you’ll know which room each box goes to for easy unpacking. The more you organize when you pack, the easier it is when it’s time to unpack.

Plan for Texas Weather.
Depending on what time of year you're making a move — and where your Texas relocation takes you — the weather needs to be part of your plan. Texas has its share of severe weather, from hurricane conditions along the Gulf Coast to the tornado activity we see all over the Lone Star State. Make sure you check the forecast — both for your start and destination cities as well as the route along the way. Check more than once, too. An old saying goes, "If you don’t like the Texas weather, wait a minute and it will change."

Set Up Your Utilities Before the Move.
You don’t want to move into a dark house, and a hot shower at the end of the day will be much appreciated. Call or go online a week before your Texas relocation kicks off to set up your electricity and other utilities. TXU Energy is the #1 choice for electricity in Texas, and we can help you find a plan that saves you money.
