  • Big Thicket National Preserve — Located in southeastern Texas, this state park is home to virgin pine and cypress forests, wide meadows and a blackwater swamp.

  • Enchanted Rock Natural Area — Right outside Fredericksburg, Texas, you can climb to the top of this natural wonder which boasts a 500-foot-high dome of pink granite.

  • Padre Island National Seashore — Situated along the south Texas coast, this stunning seashore protects the longest undeveloped stretch of barrier island in the world.

  • Sea Center Texas — Near Houston and Galveston, this marine aquarium, fish hatchery and nature center has free admission.

  • Cedar Hill State Park — Just minutes south of downtown Dallas, this park includes access to the 7,500 acres of Joe Pool Lake. Plus, there are 15 miles of bike trails and self-guided tours of the old Penn Farmstead, which once occupied the area for over a century.

  • Possum Kingdom State Park — Nestled in the rugged area that includes canyons formed by the Brazos River, it's just an hour or so west of Fort Worth. Lake Possum Kingdom is 20,000 acres of clear, blue water and home to some of the best fishing you'll find in Texas.
