Butter the popcorn and settle in to watch and vote on more than two dozen fun, informative and thoughtful films from high school students who have shared their ideas about energy in the fifth annual TXU Energy Light Up the Red Carpet Student Film Contest.

Online voting runs through March 7 to narrow the field to a list of finalists in the high school division. A panel of judges will select the winners, who will find out their prizes at the eighth annual Dallas International Film Festival. Judges also will select the winners in the contest’s college division.

“We love this point of the contest because we get a view on what students think about energy and electricity,” said Donna Egen, who manages sponsorships for TXU Energy. “It’s also fun to see all of the ways students use social media and other efforts to drive attention to their works.”

The annual contest invites students at the high school and college levels to produce films ranging from dramas to comedies, music videos and animation to convey their ideas about energy conservation and how energy affects our lives. The grand prize winner in each category will receive $7,500 to split with their schools, as well as video editing equipment. Other winners will receive cash and software prizes.

In all, 26 high school students from Dallas, Houston, Laredo and other cities across the state have films in the contest.

The TXU Energy Light Up the Red Carpet Student Film Contest has awarded more than $120,000 in cash and prizes to student filmmakers and their schools. It also has given winning students the opportunity to walk the red carpet at the Dallas International Film Festival and to meet professional actors, writers, producers and critics. Past winners have secured internships and have gotten invaluable insights and experience toward careers in film and television.
