On April 22, TXU Energy joins America in celebrating Earth Day - a day dedicated to celebrating the Earth and for renewing our commitment to creating a healthier environment. Every day we should work to protect our planet, and Earth Day is the time to unite around new actions.
First started in 1970 by Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson, Earth Day has become the world's largest secular holiday celebrated by more than 500 million people in 175 countries.
The tremendous response to the first Earth Day can be credited with helping persuade Congress to pass many important environmental laws including the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act and the Endangered Species Act.
