Types & Sources of Renewable Energy

Renewable energy is electricity generated from eco-friendly fuel resources, such as Texas wind energy, water, biomass or solar – fuel sources that are continuously replenished or are "renewable". Generally these renewable energy resources are considered the cleanest forms of power generation and have low environmental impact.

If you're buying renewable energy from a provider, does that mean the electricity is coming straight from renewable energy sources like wind farms or Texas solar panels? Not exactly. TXU Energy and other providers purchase Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) for renewable energy rate plans. Each REC represents electricity generated from renewable energy resources – whether wind, water, biomass or solar energy.

Generators of electricity connect their power to an electricity transmission grid so your electricity is delivered from a "pool" of generated power. Because all companies that generate electricity – including renewable energy generators – connect to the grid, there's no way to guarantee the source of the actual electricity coming into your house. However, RECs do guarantee that the applicable renewable energy purchased for your plan is generated from renewable resources. So, you can rest assured that if you're on a plan that includes renewable energy, like our TXU Energy Texas Choice plans with 10% renewable wind energy or 100% renewable wind energy, you're contributing to a cleaner, greener Texas.
